Japan – black and white memories

JAPAN

As Jung once said about Europeans traveling outside of their culture, they are all living in Europe, that is, in a sort of bottle filled with European air. Walking the Shikoku pilgrimage broke the bottle for me. It allowed me to really feel the Japanese spirit, that invisible world of which a European mind merely dreams. That’s why the whole journey felt like a dream and the memories started to fade away once I woke up. But I know I brought something that will stay with me forever.

Black and white memories from walking the pilgrimage route on Shikoku Island in 2023.
The entire route is about 1,200 kilometers long and goes through 88 "official" temples and numerous other sacred sites where the Buddhist priest Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) is believed to have trained or have spent time during the 9th Century.

 Enjoy the journey!
